Hugely successful Union Local elections

The energy and commitment to be part of a dynamic union structure representing the interests of our members was evident in the recent Local elections.

Many of the Locals had contested elections for the Local Officer positions, and Auckland Local had a record 18 nominations for the 10 Committee positions. This is a welcome sign of a unified and relevant union with so many willing to stand up and do their part for the collective good.

Congratulations to all elected. We look forward to working with you to protect hard-won safe systems of work and to enhance the working lives of our membership.

For those that have previously served the Union and will no longer be an official part of the Local committee, we thank you for all of your time, dedication and tenacity in representing our members. We appreciate your service to the membership and no doubt some of you will be looking forward to a break from the phone calls impacting on personal and family time.

The work of a union official and local committee member is not easy. It requires the balancing of interests to protect the collective interest, it can involve significant impost on personal time but being part of a united union advocating for the safety and wellness of our membership can also be rewarding. We thank all those that keep the collective good at heart and step at all times of day and night to support and represent our members.

We also extend our appreciation to the Returning Officers who spend hours of their time ensuring the elections are held fairly and in accordance with the Rules. Democracy is at the heart of our union and the Returning Officers are the guardians of our transparent election processes.

We also held the first election conducted with electronic voting. The Auckland membership already had three elections for the contested Secretary, President and Vice President elections and with 18 nominations for the Committee the Returning Officer requested the Committee election be conducted electronically. The Union had previously decided to trial electronic voting these elections for the Wellington Local. Wellington’s Local officers and committee were elected unopposed so it was fortuitous that we could still run the trial but in Auckland. An 89% turnout for the electronic election can only be described as a great success. The electronic election was conducted in conjunction with the Northern Returning Officer and our webmaster who will be providing a report to the Committee on the process, benefits and provide recommendations for future electronic elections.

If your Local has not elected a full compliment of Officer or Local positions, you will still have an opportunity to step up. We will be working with those Locals to encourage participation. Development of union officials is an important part of any Local and the National Union. Regeneration and rejuvenation is positive when nurtured by experienced union officials who can lead and guide the less experienced. Many may not think they have the skills or the time to dedicate to a Local Committee but many hands make lighter the work, and the experienced officials will help you find your feet.
