The NZPFU Auckland Local is providing this update to ensure members have clear and accurate information regarding the recent asbestos testing and subsequent actions at Auckland City Fire Station.

Comprehensive testing has now been completed across the station. Results from 16 separate sampling locations have all returned clear of asbestos. Based on this outcome, the station building can now be safely re-occupied.

Union Engagement and Actions

The NZPFU Auckland Local remains actively engaged with management to ensure that all aspects of member welfare, risk containment, and operational readiness are properly addressed.

Key agreed actions from this afternoon’s meeting with management are as follows:

  • Asbestos Management Plan: Development of a detailed plan with clear dates, timeframes, and ongoing partnership with the Union’s Asbestos Subject Matter Expert (Alex).
  • Communication and Contractor Management: Re-establish effective lines of communication with the Property Team and Points of Contact. Review and embed a more robust contractor sign-in process and agreed work plans prior to any works commencing.
  • Air Monitoring: Investigate the option of ongoing air sampling and monitoring over a defined period following this incident.
  • Member Welfare: Provide health screening and wrap-around support for any members who require it.
  • Gear Laundering Process: Develop a better process and designated clean area for the laundering and decontamination of risk reduction investigation overalls.
  • Partnered Investigation: Undertake a joint investigation into this incident to identify lessons learned and ensure clear preventative measures moving forward.

Next Steps

  • Members who have worked at Auckland City Station since July 2025 are to complete a Safe@Work entry as a precautionary record.

The Auckland Local recognises that there have been pockets of uncertainty and concern throughout the Districts. We want to assure members that your union is fully engaged at every level to protect member safety, welfare, and operational capability.

Thank you to all members for your professionalism, patience, and unity as this process continues.
