Today we stand with all those affected by the deadly Christchurch earthquake 15 years ago today.

The earthquake decimated parts of Christchurch, leaving 185 dead in its wake. It may be the 15th anniversary, but for many, the impact is as devastating today as it was then.

We stand with our members, past and present, who responded in the most horrific circumstances. They put their lives at great risk to save many and recover those who perished.

The unseen toll on those who responded is the occupational illness and strain on their wellbeing. They now quietly work through their own health struggles or, sadly, have not survived the resulting occupational illness.

Inquiries into the devastating earthquake and aftershocks highlighted issues with training and resourcing to handle such a response.

We call on FENZ to take the time to read those reports, including the coronial inquiry, and reflect on the recommendations that go to the heart of a properly trained, appropriately resourced fire and emergency service, equipped to respond when the community needs it—no matter the circumstances.

In unity,
Wattie Watson
National Secretary
