The NZPFU has called off today’s strike as we have members deployed to regions to support and rescue those caught in yet another extreme weather event.

The NZPFU National Committee has called off today’s nationwide strike, which was scheduled for one hour from midday today.

Deployed NZPFU members include water rescue teams in Kaikōura. Other members deployed to Blenheim are cleaning up or on their way home, no doubt cold, wet and exhausted.

Our members in the 111 emergency dispatch centres have been working hard, and today’s shift will be just as busy.

Heavy rain warnings are in place for the Wairarapa region today. Horowhenua, Manawatū, Taihape, Tararua and Hawke's Bay are also under a heavy rain watch. The wider Wellington region is bracing for strong winds—which are expected to surge to severe gales.

The lower South Island is battling both rain and snowfall, making for treacherous conditions.

The NZPFU supports our members who are working hard to protect and rescue storm-hit communities.

The next strike is scheduled for 12 noon this Friday. Go to www.direemergency.nz/events for the strike event near you!

In unity,
Wattie Watson
