The Auckland Local has been working on behalf of members since mid-January to resolve the issue of legitimate travel time payments declined while attending training courses throughout Tāmaki Makaurau and at the Auckland Regional Training Centre.

We have attempted to get clarity on the intent of the increased Auckland Travel Allowance. Our understanding is that it applies to firefighters travelling to stations and training venues.

Quoted from ‘Update on Auckland Travel Allowance’ email from Brendan Nally, Deputy Chief Executive on 30 March 2021 -

“As you know, we have been working for some time on the costs of living in Auckland for our firefighters. As part of this we have agreed to a change to the Auckland travel allowance that recognises the extra time it takes to get around the city”.

This matter has been escalated internally to the DCE People for sign-off.  Members continue to have their travel claims declined.  The Auckland Local believes that FENZ has not responded in a reasonable time (6 weeks, approximately 3 of which have been with the DCE).

The Union’s advice to members is that you should continue to claim at the Auckland rate.  A dispute will be taken to ensure that all unpaid allowances are resolved.  All members, please forward email copies of travel claims that have been declined, to the Auckland Local.

Note - this advice does not apply to training at the National Training Centre in Rotorua.

If  members have any questions, please contact your Local Station Representative.
